Someone has to be accountable for a letter that arrives in 2050.
You’re being asked to hand over something you can’t easily rewrite — a message to a child, a partner, or the version of yourself ten years from now. It’s reasonable to want to know who is on the other end of that.
Who builds this
LetterForLater is built and run by Aziz Hassine, an independent software developer. It is not a venture-funded company with a growth target, and there is no team of strangers with access to your letters — which is deliberate.
Why I built it: the thought that there are things worth saying that we keep postponing, and a delivery date is what turns “one day” into a decision.

How your letters are actually handled
Described precisely, including the limits — vague security language is worth less than an honest description.
Encrypted before they reach the database
Letter titles and contents are encrypted with Fernet (AES-128-CBC with HMAC authentication) before being written to storage, and decrypted only when you or your recipient open them. To be precise: this is encryption at rest with a key held by the service, not end-to-end encryption. We could technically decrypt a letter; we don’t, and nothing in the product reads letter contents. If you need cryptographic certainty that nobody but you can read something, no service that also has to deliver it on your behalf can honestly offer that.
Yours to take at any moment
A complete export of every letter is one click away in your settings, on any plan. You never need our permission or our continued existence to keep your own words.
Released to you if the service ever ends
If LetterForLater is ever discontinued, every undelivered letter is sent back to the account that wrote it first, with at least 90 days’ notice. This is written into the Terms, not just stated here.
Not sold, not mined, not training data
Letter contents are never sold, shared with advertisers, or used to train machine-learning models. The business model is people paying for the product, which is the only arrangement that keeps those interests aligned.
What we can’t promise
Anyone offering multi-decade delivery who lists no limitations is not being straight with you.
We can’t guarantee an inbox still exists. Email addresses get abandoned. For anything truly important, name a trusted contact and keep a downloaded copy as well.
We can’t guarantee decades of operation. No independent service can. What we can guarantee is that we won’t disappear silently — hence the notice period and the release commitment.
We can’t recover a letter if our encryption key is lost. That’s the direct trade-off for encrypting them at all. Keys are backed up separately from the database precisely because of this.
