What to write in a New Year letter
There are no rules. Most good New Year letters cover a few of these:
- Looking back on 2026. What happened, what surprised you, what you learned.
- Who you are right now. Your routines, your worries, the song you can’t stop playing. These details are what you’ll enjoy reading most.
- What you hope for in 2027. Write it as a hope, not a resolution. You’re talking to a friend, not setting targets.
- A note for a hard day. Something you’ll need to hear if the year turns out difficult.
- Questions for your future self. Did you move? Are you still friends with…? Did it work out?

Read it on 1 January 2028, then write the next one. Many people make it a yearly tradition.

Dear me,
It’s 31 December 2026, a little after ten. This year was busier than I wanted. I changed jobs in March and I’m still not sure it was the right call.
By the time you read this, I hope you’ve stopped checking your phone first thing in the morning. I hope you went back to swimming. I hope you called Grandma more than twice.
If 2027 was hard, remember that 2026 was hard too, and you got through it.

How long should a New Year letter be?
As long as you like. A few honest paragraphs is plenty, and a short letter you finish beats a long one you don’t.
Is it free?
Yes. Letters to yourself up to 6 months ahead are free, with no card. Delivery on New Year’s Day 2028 and other dates further out are part of Premium.
Can anyone else read it?
No. Letters are encrypted before they’re stored, and we never read or sell them.
Can I change it after writing it?
Until you seal it, it’s a draft you can change as often as you like. Once it’s sealed, it stays closed until the day it arrives.
How will I receive it?
By email, on the day you chose, with the date you wrote it.
